Ficksburg has many charms, but perhaps the greatest is its serenity. Located at the foot of the Maluti Mountains, the views here are nothing short of breathtaking — from the golden light to the crisp, clean air that’s medicine for the soul.
We’re also uniquely positioned right on the Lesotho border — the only South African town where the border crosses through. This makes Ficksburg the perfect gateway to the towering Maluti Mountains of Lesotho, often snow-covered in winter, which is a big drawcard for 4×4 adventurers and motorbike enthusiasts. From here, you can also access the dramatic beauty of Katse Dam, and the ski slopes of Afriski.
November is Cherry Festival season, and there’s no better time to visit our region. This much-loved event brings a full month of festivities, from jazz and soul music festivals to sports tournaments, local markets, and unforgettable cherry-picking experiences. While you’re here, take a scenic drive along the R26 and stop at three of our favourite farm stalls — The Cabin, Constantia, and Ionia. These charming spots offer year-round cherry products and shelves of handmade local goods. It’s the perfect blend of celebration, flavour, and small-town charm.
Culture lovers will enjoy a visit to the All Saints Anglican Church, where the stained-glass windows are a hidden masterpiece. Created by artist Helen Tennant, these remarkable windows depict indigenous flowers using broken pieces of coloured glass — a breathtaking tribute to the flora of our area.
The town itself is rich in heritage, with beautiful sandstone buildings, including the striking NG Church in the centre of town, home to a magnificent original organ. These architectural treasures give Ficksburg its unique charm and are well worth exploring on foot.
Art lovers will appreciate the Pellissier Art Gallery, showcasing priceless South African works, including friezes by J.H. Pierneef — viewable by appointment.
Don’t miss Sandstone Estate just outside town — home to one of the largest collections of narrow-gauge steam trains in the world. With over 25 km of private track, scenic train rides wind through the farm past mountains and fields of cosmos in bloom. The estate hosts two standout events each year: the Easter Steam & Cosmos Festival, and the Cherry Steam Festival in November — both showcasing heritage trains, vintage vehicles, and a touch of magic for all ages.
Outdoorsy types can enjoy mountain biking trails, the Four Peaks Marathon at Moolmanshoek, game farms, lion farms, and fishing in nearby dams — plus scenic drives to Clarens and beyond. History buffs can visit Charlie Barrett’s private military gun collection, a rare and fascinating stop.
But the real magic of Ficksburg? The people. Warm, genuine, and proud of where we live.
